It would be difficult to pigeon-hole our music into one genre since we’ve dabbled in most things from rock to choral. The songs we write for use in concerts range from praise and worship to testimony and teaching songs. The songs we perform will depend on whether we’re working with a choir and band, or if it’s just us and a piano.

Recordings

Many of The Screaming Donkeys’ albums were originally available on CD. You’ll now need to contact us if you want a CD … assuming there are any copies left when you enquire.

Two Christmas albums by The Screaming Donkeys, ‘Join The Chorus’ and ‘Carmina Laetitiae’, are available on the usual streaming platforms and YouTube, as is the most recent release ‘A Working Hypothesis’ by David Churchyard which is a digital-only release. ‘No Small Feet’ is yet to make it online. There are a few CD copies left.

A Working Hypothesis – David Churchyard

This album was something of an experiment that started in the Summer of 2024 and was expected to last a couple of weeks. Just over a year later it was finished. It has subsequently undergone a few overdubs/re-takes and a bit of audio-polishing but is now available on the various interweb options.

In the wise words of Ronnie van Zant, “Turn It Up!” A full set of sleeve notes are available here, because you can’t include them on Spotify, providing some insight into the song-writing process and the thinking behind the music and lyric of each song. Recommended reading, at least for the first time you hear the album.
Join The Chorus – The Screaming Donkeys

December 2025 saw the release of our first Christmas album for several years. It’s a stonker, containing many well-known old carols and a couple of brand-new ones that are sure to add more than a little spice to your mulled ale!

Recording began in January 2024 with a new version of Ding Dong Merrily On High which has a driving beat and has been a ‘must have’ for the last two years at our festive gigs. It took a long time to get around to recording the rest of the album, but the wait was worth it.

When we first made Christmas albums, we (David and Melanie) got all the solos. Now it seems the kids have all grown up and they get all the solos! At least we got a duet somewhere!
No Small Feet – The Screaming Donkeys

During Lockdown, the Screaming Donkeys recorded over 80 songs/music videos for use in online services at our church. The best of these were then remixed and compiled on to a double-album called No Small Feet. Our curate commented one Sunday that what we were producing for online services was no small feat. We, typically, decided to mishear him, thus the name of the album. No Small Feet includes 44 songs, including a few new songs written especially for particular services.
Carmina Laetitiae – The Screaming Donkeys

Christmas music is very popular in our house! No surprise then that we have now made five Christmas albums, each one taking a healthily unorthodox approach to both well-known and lesser-known carols, as well as many written by David, and a few by his father Gordon.

Featuring carols with old lyrics to new tunes, and old tunes with new words! For example, The Merry Morn Of Christmastide, a self-penned celebration that includes the wonderful words ‘For Christ is born of Mary mild, Heav’n’s greatest gift to us – a child, O merry, merry morn of Christmastide!’

This album also features the best and most jolly version of The Holly & The Ivy we’ve ever found – but perhaps we’re biased.
The Writing On The Wall

Back in 1993 we wrote and staged a musical based on the first six chapters of Daniel. Set in the grandeur of ancient Babylon, initially under the rulership of the infamous King Nebuchadnezzar, it includes the Fiery Furnace, the Lion’s Den and, of course, the Writing On The Wall incident at Belshazzar’s feast.
